License Types and Terms Explained
This article is part of the Licensing for Keysight Test & Measurement series of articles.
License Types
Node-locked License
A node-locked or “fixed” license cannot be moved.
- It is best for cases where the product will only be used on a single device, making it the most cost-effective option for individual use scenarios.
- All hardware licenses, such as oscilloscope bandwidth licenses, are node locked.
Transportable License
A transportable license can be moved between instruments or PCs with an internet connection.
Floating License
A floating or "network" license is managed by a central license server, allowing multiple clients on the same network to borrow licenses as needed. This system operates similarly to a library, where users can check out licenses temporarily and return them when no longer in use.
- Each license can only be used by one user at a time, managed by the server.
- The license server is set up and maintained by the customer, not by Keysight.
USB Portable License
This license is tied to a physical USB key, allowing it to be easily transferred between different devices. When the USB key is connected to a host device, it activates the product, enabling its use on that device.
- This setup is ideal for multiple users who need to share licenses frequently across various instruments or PCs that are not networked, for example, secure environments.
- Note that USB portable licenses require an additional software driver.
- The USB key is purchased separately. It is Keysight part number SW1000-D10.
- The USB key is not a memory device.
